Arthritis is the most common chronic disease in Canada. In Quebec, more than 1.3 million people live with arthritis and many are under the age of 65. In 2040, this number is expected to grow to nearly 1.7 million.

As the leading cause of disability in the country, arthritis costs Quebec $31.9 billion annually in healthcare costs and lost productivity, and from the devastating toll of pain, disability and lost wellbeing. Yet the healthcare system is falling short. The latest data shows that only 50 per cent of hip and knee replacements in Quebec are completed within the recommended six-month timeframe. In Arthritis Society Canada's 2026 State of Arthritis Report Card [https://arthritis.ca/reportcard2026], Quebec received a grade of 'C', highlighting the urgent need for action.

We have a solution. Arthritis Action Now: The Plan to End Arthritis in Canada [https://arthritis.ca/get-involved/take-action/arthritis-action-now/] provides a clear roadmap to prevent arthritis, improve treatment and ultimately find a cure. To make real progress, the next Quebec government should commit to three key priorities from this plan:

1. Faster access to specialist care: Support interdisciplinary teams in rheumatology clinics, including nurses, physiotherapists and pharmacists, so patients are seen by the right provider at the right time.

2. Care closer to home: Integrate arthritis care into local community service centres (CLSCs) and expand access to rehabilitation so patients can manage their condition in their communities and prevent progression of their disease.

3. Reduced wait times for surgery: Improve how patients are triaged and prioritized for joint replacement surgery so those who need care most aren't left waiting while their condition worsens.

Quebecers living with arthritis deserve timely access to care, specialists and the treatments that improve their quality of life. We hope the next provincial government will work with the arthritis community and make this a priority.
